Quartz and granite come up in almost every kitchen conversation, and both earn their place. The right answer depends less on which one is better and more on how you cook and how much upkeep you want.
What each one actually is
Granite is natural stone, quarried in slabs, so every piece is unique and no two kitchens look exactly alike. Quartz is engineered: crushed stone bound with resin, which is why it comes in consistent colors and can be matched from one slab to the next.
Care and upkeep
Granite is porous and needs resealing roughly once a year, especially around the sink. Quartz is non-porous, so it never needs sealing and resists staining from wine, oil and citrus far better.
Heat, scratches and seams
Granite takes a hot pan without complaint. Quartz can scorch under direct heat, so trivets matter. Both can be scratched, and both show a seam where two pieces meet, though a good fabricator keeps seams tight and places them where the eye does not travel.
